In an extraordinary news conference on January 9, 1972, televised live with a panel of journalists at a Los Angeles hotel, a sixty-six-year-old Hughes called from the Bahamas to an amplified telephone (center) to denounce a planned autobiography, purportedly cowritten by him and novelist Clifford Irving, as a fake.
